I work on a Victorian Gothic hand press using traditional limestone blocks. I sometimes wonder if the enormous physical effort involved is a way of balancing the pleasure of drawing, that familiar Protestant ethic again! The medium itself requires another kind of balance, it allows you to draw freely; and yet you must be projecting several colors, printing one over the other – a kind of anticipatory spontaneity. I almost always use 3 or 4 colors and the buzz comes with superimposing one transparent color over another.
