John Thirlwall studied at Sunderland and Liverpool Art Colleges and taught art in schools and colleges in Nottingham, Sunderland and Manchester. He was Art Inspector (schools) for Sunderland and Staffordshire LEA's and the chief examiner for ‘O’, ‘A’ and CSE levels (AEB and Northern Board). He co-wrote the 5 Art Teaching manuals - 4 to 16 years - ( pub. by LCP).
He believes in the primacy of drawing as an entity in itself as well as a preliminary study for paintings and other art forms.
During this workshop you will draw inspiration from the beautiful grounds at Mid Wales Arts, which consists of a permanent collection of sculptures by Stefan Knapp, John Paddison, Rosemary Terry and members of Sculpture Cymru in order to explore different skills and approaches to drawing.
You will be taught mainly in the medium of charcoal. However, experimentation with different materials is welcome and therefore you may also like to bring along your preferred medium.
