Sculpteen 2020

We know it's last minute but... we are very happy to announce we can run our 2020 Sculpteen programme after all!

Sessions start this Monday 27th July! We have approved risk assessments and feel confident we can offer a safe environment.

Classes will be limited in size (maximum 6 young people per session to maintain social distancing) so all attendees will get close attention. They will work with professional artists in the studio and wherever possible in the outdoors, enjoying the fresh air.

Classes will run every Monday, 10-4 and are suitable for all teenagers. The sessions will be £15 per teenager, family discounts apply. Please contact us asap for a booking form: office@midwalesarts.org.uk or tel 01686 688369 / 07970671819 during office hours.

27th July:

Cathy will start the sessions with a basic Introduction to Sculpture. Together we will discuss work from our current exhibitions, look at slides and some examples of work in progress. We will then have a fun speed drawing session and develop ideas for individual work.

Making Maquettes: We will learn about and make maquettes and armatures. This will give us the opportunity to learn about and explore the possibilities and limitations of different sculptural techniques and materials.

3rd August:

Glenn Morris is a well known Welsh Sculptor who has has work in several important collections in Wales including MWA. He is a member of Sculpture Cymru and has several years experience of teaching sculpture.

This session will focus on using flat and geometric planes to make constructions using thin sheets of card, balsa and wood. We will look at the principles of shape and space with particular reference to Anthony Caro and other constructivist artists.

10th August:

Ben Martin recently graduated from UWE Bristol with a degree in Fine Art, and is now a freelance artist and graphic designer. He works with found and recycled materials, creating wire sculptures and faces in reclaimed materials such as wood, scrap metal and nails. In this workshop you will use your imagination to make 3 d constructions out of found objects. We have a wealth of 'finds' that have uncovered over the years on the farm and encourage you to bring any interesting items of your own. This will be a fun day and can be as figurative or abstract as you wish.

17th August:

This week Glenn will work with the group to develop larger pieces based on their original ideas made in weeks 1 and 2.

24th August

Sculpture Cymru member Kevin Blockley has just filled the SC space for 2020 with new work made during lock down. We will use his one man show, an exhibition of plaster figures, as a starting point, Glenn will show you how to use plaster to build a sculpture. The advantage of using plaster is that it sets rapidly, this will enable us to work quickly. You will then be able to sculpt a relatively soft material, practise experimental mark making and use natural materials to create texture, tone and depth. The only limit will be your imagination!

2021 Young people's sculpture exhibition starts here!
