Welcome to Mid Wales Arts

About Us

We’re a not-for-profit, voluntary organisation working with artists, young people and the local community to develop access to the arts at all levels in Mid Wales. The centre is run for and by artists, volunteers and good will. Entrance is free. Your donations are used to support our work developing arts awareness and involvement in the local and wider community.

The main house of Mid Wales Arts, originally named Maesmawr, dates back to 1526 and was originally a Welsh longhouse that grew into a successful farm. Much of the original structure remains with the addition of an imposing Georgian front in 1820.

With a background in arts education, and a keeness to foster talent and promote interest in the arts, Cathy Knapp saw the potential for a gallery and sculpture park at Maesmawr. Her late husband, the internationally renowned enamellist and sculptor, Stefan Knapp, left a unique collection of paintings and sculpture which are on display in the house and grounds.

This area of Mid Wales has fostered a wealth of artists, who have found inspiration in the unique beauty of the landscape, as well as the space and tranquility needed to develop their work. Mid Wales Arts has grown as a result of an initiative by Powys Arts Forum’s, Harvesting the Arts, which encouraged collaborative projects between creatives in the area. Artists are involved in the direction of the centre, offering workshops, talks and demonstrations. We encourage submissions from artists who wish to propose workshops or be considered for future exhibitions.
