The main house of Mid Wales Arts, originally named Maesmawr, dates back to 1526 and was originally a Welsh longhouse that grew into a successful farm. Much of the original structure remains with the addition of an imposing Georgian front in 1820.

With a background in arts education, and a keeness to foster talent and promote interest in the arts, Cathy Knapp saw the potential for a gallery and sculpture park at Maesmawr. Her late husband, the internationally renowned enamellist and sculptor, Stefan Knapp, left a unique collection of paintings and sculpture which are on display in the house and grounds.

This area of Mid Wales has fostered a wealth of artists, who have found inspiration in the unique beauty of the landscape, as well as the space and tranquility needed to develop their work. Mid Wales Arts has grown as a result of an initiative by Powys Arts Forum’s, Harvesting the Arts, which encouraged collaborative projects between creatives in the area. Artists are involved in the direction of the centre, offering workshops, talks and demonstrations. We encourage submissions from artists who wish to propose workshops or be considered for future exhibitions.

Artist, musicians and arts educators are selected by our committee. For our exhibitions, we look for high quality, original art work, we give priority the work of artists who have a connection to Wales. We welcome applications from artists who have not previously exhibited, and we encourage, thoughtful and engaging work.

We prefer our arts educators to be highly experienced in their field and able to impart knowledge in a clear yet friendly way. Our students range greatly in age and ability and we keep groups small so that everyone gets the attention they need.

Our submissions team review applications regularly, though it may be some time before a decision is made. We will inform you of our decision by email, please allow at least 28 days before checking the status of your submission. After review, we may request a meeting, or the provision of original artwork before making a final decision. We cannot pay expenses for visits to us, or if necessary, we may travel to your studio.

We (two families) spent 5 hours here with the friendly owners who entertained and fed us on a very rainy bank holiday Sunday. The sculpture trail was fun for the children and adults. The food in the cafe was excellent, cooked to order and catered for our finicky dietary requirements. To finish we played with Rosie (the owner’s dog) and played in the pottery workshop. We turned up not knowing why to expect and spent all day.

I recently traveled to this location for work. Being my first time in Wales I didn’t know what to expect but I was surprised by the high quality of the center’s offerings. Getting to the center is quite easy as it it well connected by road and railway. The art on display at the center is by more and less renowned artists. Sculptures, paintings, works on paper, and textiles can be admired in every area. I attended a couple of great workshops which were taught by talented artists and well attended. I highly recommend the MWAC and hope to be able to visit again in the near future.

Hi Helen, Thank you again for leading yesterdays walk, the weather was not promising but the company made up for it! I really enjoyed the views, the chat and collecting things for using in my “artwork” later I was nervous about the pottery class but Cathy is so passionate about it that her enthusiasm rubs off on everyone and gives you the courage to just have a go!
